Armadillos have become a big problem over the past several years here in middle Georgia. WEBBCON Pest Control and Wildlife Removal is currently working on armadillo trapping in Fayetteville, Georgia. This Fayetteville customer called after they discovered an armadillo burrow underneath a bush next to their foundation. As with most customers, they were under the impression that an armadillo was actually living in this burrow. There was also a lot of damage done to their front lawn by the armadillo(s). WEBBCON was hired to rid their yard of these armadillos and we got to work. We took a look around their yard to figure out the best places to set our traps. Of course the burrow was a prime spot of one cage trap. The next morning I went out to check our traps. I was happy to find that we had caught an armadillo on our first night of trapping. It was the trap over the burrow that worked this night.

Armadillo Habits

Armadillos live in burrows that they dig. These “live in burrows” can be up to 15 feet deep. They tend to use the same burrow to live in day after day. Armadillos also dig numerous (up to 12 or so) “escape” burrows in their roaming area. These escape burrows will only be a few feet deep. It is very common for these escape burrows to be next to foundations. Armadillos use these burrows to get away from danger like predators, family dogs, and even you and I. They always know where the closest burrow is at. Armadillos do not visit these escape burrows each night. However, they will make their rounds every 4 to 6 nights to check on and maintain them. Armadillos will clean debris out, make sure they are still accessible  and even dig them a little deeper over time.

Have you ever found an armadillo burrow in your yard and filled it in only to find it dug back out days later? Well, that is why.  Armadillos have very poor eye sight. Armadillos choose to dig escape burrows next to larger objects like houses because of their poor eye sight. They can find a large object like a house much easier in the dark. Armadillos can quickly run to the foundation and follow along it till they reach the escape burrow. Once they dive in they are safe. They will wait till the danger is gone before coming back out.

Finish The Job

Now that we have caught one armadillo we will keep traps out to catch any others that are visiting the customer’s yard. The typical armadillo job is resolved in under a week and a half with no more than 3 armadillos trapped and removed during that time. However, we have had several jobs over the years where we removed more than the typical 3 armadillos from one yard. Our highest number trapped and removed from a single yard was 9 armadillos. That job took us just over 4 weeks to complete.
