Bat Removal & Cleanup
Of the 16 species of bats found in the Georgia the Big Brown Bat and the Little Brown Bat are the 2 that are commonly creating a nuisance. They take up residence in the attics, chimneys, shutters, and voids such as vents, gables, holes in eaves and roof lines of our houses, and other buildings. They give birth and raise there young between May 1st and August 15th. It is best to allow bats to raise their young (if possible) between these dates.
Bats are a protected species in Georgia and can not be harmed or harassed. Bats themselves are not the problem. They carry parasites such as fleas and ticks and also commonly carry rabies, all of which can be harmful to humans and their pets. Their dropping (guano) builds up just outside the entry points to their roost and also in large amounts in their roosting sites. The buildup of these droppings can damage insulation, omit a strong ammonia odor, and even collapse sheetrock. Their guano provides an ideal breeding ground for the microorganism Histoplasmosis. Histoplasmosis can become airborne and cause lung infections in humans with nymoia like symptoms which can be fatal if not treated. Bat removal and exclusion and the clean up of theirs droppings should always be performed by a professional with the proper equipment.
However, bats are good to have around. They consume extremely large amounts of mosquitoes and other insects each night. Giving them an alternate place to roost and raise their young will help to keep them from choosing your house as that place. For this reason we provide bats boxes that we can install out in your yard, high up in trees and away from your home.
